LIVE MUSIC: The Flaming Lips at Artpark

Last night, a spaceship full of incredible musicians landed in Western New York and brought with them a soul so beautiful, it radiated from the rafters in the form of confetti explosions and balloons the size of Smart Cars. It's been about fifteen years since The Flaming Lips played Buffalo and they certainly made up for it. Their set was littered with old classics like "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" and "She Don't Use Jelly." However, a lot of what they played was from Embryonic, their current psychedelic home run and truth be told, their twelfth studio album. Wayne Coyne has adopted an almost Jim Morrison-like stage presence at times and his intensity is felt all the way back to the cheap seats; he jumped in the bubble and almost made it to the lawn for Christ's sake. This is a band who leaves two pints of blood on the stage and rocks harder than all of their contemporaries. They opened with "Worm Mountain" and everyone's jaws hit the ground for five minutes until they did it all over again for the next couple hours. The band closed the show with "Do You Realize?" and every cute couple in the place started hugging. We all left changed in some way. It's not every day that an experience like this comes to town and Wayne certainly did his best to leave us all with a beautiful smile in our eyes.
